For the best visit, plan your trip between September and October, when the surrounding rice fields turn golden. But, from May to June the waterfall’s flow peaks due to summer rains. I was there in December and it was still as beautiful as you can imagine.
Getting to Ban Gioc Waterfall from Hanoi
Reaching Ban Gioc is an adventure that immerses you in Vietnam’s countryside. From Hanoi, the easiest way is to take a night bus to Cao Bang City. I used the Khan Khoan bus company and took a sleeping bus for around $20, which was a great option. The ride from My Đinh bus station in Hanoi to Chao Bang took around 7 hours and was much more comfortable than expected! The driver even dropped me off right near my accommodation in Cao Bang, saving me the hassle of heading all the way to the bus station on the other side of the city and then finding the taxi to the guesthouse.
From there, the next morning I hopped on a local bus to the waterfall. The ride to Ban Gioc takes about 1.5 hours, winding through scenic roads lined with rice paddies, serene villages, and limestone karsts. Every turn offered a view that begged to be captured, making the journey as rewarding as the destination itself.
What to Do at Ban Gioc Waterfall
1. Get Up Close with a Bamboo Raft Hop on a bamboo raft to get as close as possible to the cascading water. Feeling the mist on your face and hearing the thunderous roar of the falls up close is an unforgettable experience. It’s also a fantastic spot for photos, so have your camera ready.
2. Visit Nguom Ngao Cave Just a short distance from the waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave is a hidden gem filled with incredible limestone formations. Its cool, refreshing interior offers a peaceful contrast to the vibrant energy of the falls and is well worth exploring.
