Temples, Islands & Culture Youโ€™ll Never Forget

Cambodia is one of those countries that catches you by surprise.
Itโ€™s not just the temples or the nature – itโ€™s the feeling of stillness, the warmth of the people, and the way history and beauty collide at every turn.

From ancient jungle ruins to glowing islands and riverside towns, here are four unforgettable places to visit in Cambodia that truly shaped my trip – and might shape yours too.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ 1. Angkor โ€“ Cambodiaโ€™s Timeless Wonder

Letโ€™s be honest, if youโ€™re coming to Cambodia, this is probably already on your list.
But trust me, nothing prepares you for how it feels to be there.

Angkor isnโ€™t just one temple. Itโ€™s a massive ancient city with hundreds of ruins spread across the jungle.
The most famous is Angkor Wat, best seen at sunrise when the lotus towers glow golden and the air is still. But thereโ€™s so much more.

Some of my favorites:

  • Bayon, with its mysterious smiling faces
  • Ta Prohm, where tree roots spill over mossy walls
  • Preah Khan, quiet and hauntingly beautiful

๐Ÿ“ Tip: If you truly want to get yourself lost in the ancient temples, one day of exploring wonโ€™t nearly be enough. Hire a tuk-tuk or rent a bicycle if you’re up for the challenge. Donโ€™t forget water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.

๐Ÿ“ Base yourself in Siem Reap – a lively town with night markets, cafes, and plenty of budget stays.

๐Ÿ๏ธ 2. Koh Rong – The Island That Feels Like a Secret

If youโ€™re dreaming of crystal-clear water, powdery beaches, and no real plansโ€ฆ this island is your escape.

Koh Rong is one of Cambodiaโ€™s most beautiful islands – still mostly undeveloped and naturally wild. There are barely any roads, and just enough infrastructure to make you comfortable while staying off the grid.

โœจ Highlights:

  • Lonely Beach โ€“ my personal favorite and where I stayed. Itโ€™s remote, peaceful, and feels like your own little slice of paradise. Think hammocks, sunsets, and fireflies.
  • Swimming in glowing bioluminescent plankton after dark
  • Day hikes to hidden beaches through jungle trails
  • Watching fishing boats drift across turquoise water

Itโ€™s not for everyone – the internet (and electricity ! ) is limited and things donโ€™t always run on time, but thatโ€™s exactly what makes it special.

๐Ÿšค Getting there:

Catch a ferry from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong (about 45โ€“60 minutes), then hop on a smaller boat if your beach is more remote โ€” many areas like Lonely Beach require a second transfer.

Orโ€ฆ if youโ€™re a bit crazy like me, you might end up riding with locals delivering ice to the fishermen at sunset โ€” but thatโ€™s a whole other story ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿ™๏ธ 3. Phnom Penh โ€“ Where History Meets the Present

Phnom Penh is a city of contrast.
Itโ€™s not always beautiful โ€” but itโ€™s honest.

Golden palaces sit beside busy traffic, modern cafรฉs bloom inside colonial buildings, and everywhere you go, you can feel both the past and the future in motion.

The cityโ€™s history is difficult, but essential to understand.
Visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek – two sobering but powerful reminders of Cambodiaโ€™s strength and resilience.

๐Ÿงก Things I loved:

  • Sunset walks along the Tonlรฉ Sap River promenade
  • Visiting the peaceful Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda
  • Exploring street food and artisan markets
  • Discovering small art galleries and hidden cafรฉs with stories to tell

๐Ÿ›ต Getting around: Tuk-tuks are easy and affordable. The Grab app works well, too.

๐ŸŒŠ 4. The Mekong River โ€“ The Heartbeat of Cambodia

Before there were roads, there was the Mekong.

Flowing from the north to the south, the Mekong River connects towns, people, and traditions across Cambodia. And if you want to slow down and feel connected to the local rhythm, this is the place to go.

I spent time in two towns that I highly recommend:

๐ŸŒฟ Kratie

A small riverside town best known for the chance to spot the rare Irrawaddy dolphins.
You can take a boat at sunrise or sunset and, if youโ€™re lucky, youโ€™ll see them surfacing – shy, beautiful, and critically endangered.

Other highlights:

  • Cycling to nearby villages and rice fields
  • Watching orange skies reflected in the river at sunset
  • Staying in local guesthouses right on the water

๐Ÿก Kampong Cham

Less touristy, but just as charming.
Here youโ€™ll find colonial buildings, bamboo bridges, quiet temples, and everyday Cambodian life unfolding slowly along the riverbanks.

๐Ÿ›ถ Tip: Take your time. Stay at a homestay, ride a scooter, and just let the Mekong set your pace.

๐Ÿชท Final Thoughts

Cambodia isnโ€™t flashy or loud. Itโ€™s gentle, layered, and full of heart.
Itโ€™s a place that doesnโ€™t just show you things, it lets you feel them.

From ancient jungle temples to glowing island nights, from quiet riverside mornings to the vibrant chaos of Phnom Penh, this country stays with you.

If you let it, it will change the way you travel. And maybe even the way you see the world.
